If you answer "YES" to any of these questions, contact us today.
We offer the following types of consultations:
District Consultations If your district is large, you might want us to meet with a district representative group. This group would consist of several administrators and/ or teacher representatives, such as a district math curriculum committee or 1-2 teachers from each of elementary school. Beforehand, you will provide us with information about current adoptions, current practices, data (such as test scores), curriculum documents (such as your curriculum map or curriculum guide), and any other helpful information. Based upon this information, we will suggest steps to make long-term systemic changes in the way mathematics is taught in your district. This consultation will be as interactive as you want. Call us to discuss possibilities. Teacher Presentations A Teacher presentation is another option for large school districts. In this case, you might bring a consultant in for a one-day K-5 workshop with 1-2 teacher representatives from each elementary school. For example, "Number Literacy: What's My Place? What's My Value?" works well in this situation, because it strengthens place value, number sense, and number operations in a dynamic way. From this one day, you will benefit in two ways. First, your teachers will take What's My Place? What's My Value? back to their classrooms to use. Second, you will get first-hand knowledge about possibilities for your district. Our consultant will also assess where you are and can make a district recommendation like that described above in District Consultations. Combination School Workshop/ Consultation If you are from a single school or small school district, this option is a great starting point. In order for your teachers and our consultants to get to know each other, we recommend that you begin with a workshop. Most schools choose one of these two topics: Number Literacy: What's My Place? What's My Value? Your staff will be excited that they have new materials to use, and they will discover the myriad of standards that can be so easily taught. When you call, we will determine which format and which topic to recommend as a first step. We pride ourselves in personalizing our services. As we plan for this workshop, we will ask many questions and really listen to your answers. A popular format is for our consultant to conduct Demonstration Lessons in classrooms during the school day, followed by a 2-3 hour after-school seminar with your teachers. However, there are many options. An additional benefit of this model is that we will assess where you are and make recommendations. We have seen noticeable improvement in test scores in schools that have used this model as a starting point to create systemic change in the ways math is taught and learned. From this initial encounter, many schools determine their direction and begin a long-term relationship with us. Together, hand-in-hand, piece-by-piece, we will work with you to attain specific targeted goals. Individual Teacher or Small Group Consultations We offer many types of consultations. If your school is in the process of systemic change and you have lost some veteran teachers, we can help train new staff members. We will work with your new teachers and enable your school to stay on target instead of starting from scratch. Teachers of some grade-levels may be experiencing more difficulties than others. We will work with individuals or single grade-levels, as needed. Our success with this one-on-one service has been phenomenal, due to the special blend of knowledge, trust, and respect that are typical of our consultants. Once a bond has developed, we pride ourselves in providing teachers with the expertise and confidence to improve themselves as teachers of mathematics. Developing Internal Leadership This option is for repeat customers. We have a high rate of repeat customers. Therefore, we recognize the appropriate time to develop internal leadership within a school or school district. We have been successful at helping our customers develop a successful model for using math coaches. Here is how it works. Together, we work with administrators to choose the right people to serve as Math Coaches. The Math Coaches work in sessions with our consultants to develop their leadership skills. Before long, the coaches take over much of the leg work, and we work primarily through them. Standards and Long Range Planning We will come to your school and/or district and guide your staff through the process of aligning your existing curricula with local, state and national math standards. Our consultants have studied and developed effective teaching strategies that make individual state math standards really work. We identify materials and practices that will be effective at getting the job done. Also, our consultants can help you identify weak areas and guide you as you carefully add curriculum pieces to fill the gaps. Throughout this process, we will continue to view the alignment both vertically across the grade levels and horizontally within the grade levels to ensure that concepts and teaching strategies are linked in a spiraling effect. |
