NUMBER LITERACY

A PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND NUMBERS!  Our NUMBER LITERACY publications develop a child's ability to use visual models to understand, represent, and recall concepts related to number and number operations.  The teaching and learning of number concepts once considered difficult to master becomes EASY

Currently we offer two teacher-friendly NUMBER LITERACY publications:

Each product is designed to supplement any existing curriculum and correlate to any local, state and national Math Standards. Teachers who have implemented these 10-minute routines with their children have been most pleased with the tremendous growth they have noticed!  For example, kindergarten teachers from all over the country are reporting that their children are enthusiastically exploring 3-digit place value as well as basic algebra concepts.  Imagine that!  Likewise, teachers of grade 5 are reporting that their students are successfully working with decimals, percentages and their related fractions!  Needless to say teachers of the other elementary grades are equally as pleased with the results!

Schools who have implemented NUMBER LITERACY vertically across the grade levels are reporting that they are seeing a vast improvement in their children's sense of number and number operations now that their school is using these two routines in every class school wide!

Although isolated teachers are implementing NUMBER LITERACY effectively, many schools are now writing our NUMBER LITERACY professional development and implementation into their School Improvement Plans.

Are your children NUMBER LITERATE?  If the answer is "NO", contact us!

CURIOSITY BAIT

Have you been searching for an effective way to teach difficult concepts such as
  • two-dimensional geometry terms and concepts?

  • telling time, reading clocks, and lapsed time?

  • counting money and making change?

  • the relationships between decimals, fractions, and percentages?

  • recognition of our 50 states?

  • facts about the history of the United States?

If your answer is "YES" to any of the above questions, CURIOSITY BAIT is for you!

Currently we offer 5 teacher-friendly, ready-to-use sets of CURIOSITY BAIT.  They are

When you use CURIOSITY BAIT, you are capitalizing on the fact that all children are curious.  Haven't you noticed that when you  tease children with a secret, suddenly you  have their undivided attention?  Well, that is just what you will be doing with CURIOSITY BAIT. Each day you will  "dangle" a clue to a secret, mystery pattern that only you know!  That is the teaser! You will reveal one clue each day for one month.  During the month your children work together to try to "unlock" the mystery.  The race is on!  Will you stump them before the month's end, or will they figure it out? That's it!  You are trying to "peak their curiosity".

We make it easy for you!  We have figured out all the secret patterns.  All you have to do is hang your custom-designed blue vinyl holder where all of your children can see it, read the short, teacher-friendly directions, choose a pattern from the myriad of choices, put your cards in order, and display one clue each day.  From that point on, as the facilitator, you will guide the discussions to cover content and skills.  You will be amazed at the number of standards you will teach using this very simple routine!

Of course there are some rules.  For example, you will limit the class discussion to just 5-10 minutes each day.  And you will not confirm or negate their ideas until the last day of the month...NO MATTER WHAT!  Through your daily discussions, your children will be learning difficult concepts that in the past have been so very difficult to teach. The scientific process and higher level thinking skills will abound as your children try to figure out what is going on!

Research has proven that children develop a deeper understanding by exploring topics over and extended period of time.  Likewise, children who are actively engaged in such activities are more likely to retain information and apply it in a similar but different situation.  With CURIOSITY BAIT you will be doing just that!

Our CURIOSITY BAIT products and related CURIOSITY BAIT workshops are among our most popular!

I HATE HOMEWORK!

I LOVE TEAMWORK!

If you are looking for a way to involve and educate parents you will want to check out this unique approach to homework!  I HATE HOMEWORK!  I LOVE TEAMWORK! unifies two of the most important areas of a child's life, the home and the school.  Each child becomes a member of a home team and a school team.  Problems are posed to and solved by home teams.  Solutions are compared and shared with school teams.

The TEAMWORK approach to homework empowers children to become mathematicians who

  • appreciate the beauty and value of mathematics.
  • work confidently as mathematicians.
  • learn to work alone or in teams to solve problems.
  • use mathematical reasoning.
  • communicate as mathematicians, both verbally, graphically, and in writing.

We currently offer six collections of weekly TEAMWORK challenges, one for each grade-level K-5.  These challenges span many mathematical concepts and standards which include

  • money and time
  • measurement
  • numeration
  • pattern
  • geometry
  • probability and statistics
  • data analysis and graphing
  • problem solving
  • estimation
  • mental math
  • algebraic thinking

Each collection contains 32 thought-provoking TEAMWORK challenges and a reproducible letter to send to the Home Team.  We have seen a significant correlation between high standardized test scores and children who actively participate in the TEAMWORK approach to homework!

This workshop is extremely popular in elementary schools who are working to develop effective methods for involving parents and community members in math education.
